Resume Preparation
How does writing your résumé with a career coach differ from using a resume service? The difference is depth. I won’t just cram your work and life experience into the resume format du jour, I will insist that we talk about your history, that you tell me some of the stories that capture your best achievements. I will also want to know about your dreams, goals so far unachieved, projects that you’re working on, companies and industries that you would love to work in or for, and so forth. Then we’ll, take a look at your resume and give it a make over.
Some resumes are way too long, what I like to refer to as a historical resume. Others are way too brief or unfocused. We may choose to start by writing a one page summary, a great exercise in figuring out what the most important things that you have to say are. Or we may start from scratch; especially if you’re just getting started. Or we may work on explaining how your activities in school or volunteer work or raising children can be included and show your talents. We may even decide that your current resume is great just the way it is. I may also suggest that technical people in your field review the resume as well, to ensure accuracy.
You may decide to do the typing yourself. I may help you, charging for my time. Or you may choose to take our notes to a local printer offering resume services for them to type and print. It's your choice, of course. But the result will be the best you can imagine. And while a resume is not everything, it’s a great start at getting the attention of the people you want to work for and it needs to be the best. This is the kind of resume you’ll get working with a career coach, a resume that will help you plan for the career of a lifetime.
